THE SETUP When you start off you have a flashlight, some water and a can of beans. You have no map/compass and have no idea where you are. Naturally, food, weapons and other useful items are scarce, so scavenging/hunting is the only way to survive. Your character is persistent across all servers linked to the central server and if you die, it is permanent. The mod is still in Alpha so there are still some bugs to be sorted out, but if you like the idea of a true survival sandbox, I can't recommend this mod enough. PLAYER INTERACTION Most of your time in DayZ will be spent in paranoia, deciding who to trust. Some people want to live in a friendly community, some will do whatever it takes to survive and most just want to watch the world burn. Chernarus is a fictional former-Soviet Republic country in DayZ Standalone, based on the popular Chernarus map from another Bohemia title: ARMA II.
Chernarus was established as a typical republic-style nation after it gained independence, with its formation following the dissolution of the Soviet Union (USSR) in 1991. Chernarus's landscape consists of mostly rural areas, with few larger cities. The capital of Chernarus is Novigrad, located in the south-western region of the country. Players cannot travel to Novigrad, but physical maps scattered around the world display the entire country, showing the capital city in the bottom left-hand corner. Players currently play in the most northeastern province called South Zagoria. At present, South Zagoria is infested with mindless Infected, as well as Survivors who have to endure a lack of available food, and constant threats of the infected and other Survivors. The map of this province in DayZ Standalone is referred to as Chernarus+. Chernarus also shares its similar sounding name to the real life country of Belarus, a possible influence on the developer's part, as Belarus was a post-soviet state bordered next to Russia.
History[edit | edit source]
The first settlements in the area date back to the 5th Century B.C. when the valleys of the Burnaja and Svetlaya rivers were inhabited by Skyth tribes and nomads, who later formed the Takmyr and Karzeg nations. The center of modern Chernarus had been founded in the delta of the Burnaya River and on the coast, divided from the Zagorie region which was under the supremacy of a Moscow Principate by the Black Mountains ridge.[1]
The local Slavic population constantly had to fight off the raiders from the southwest so it was traditionally bound with Russia, but always kept its independence. In the 12th Century it was controlled by dukes; in the 13th century it was united by Taras Kozub. The Kozub dynasty ruled until 1631, when Chernarus joined the Russian Empire. Chernarus became a Soviet Socialist Republic in 1922 after the end of the Russian revolution of 1917. After the demise of the Soviet Union (USSR) in 1991, Chernarus gained its independence.[2]
Following this, Chernarus was established as a Republic and its army -- the Chernarussian Defence Forces -- took possession of former Soviet military installations and stockpiles. In 2009, it suffered from a civil war that left the country in turmoil, forcing it to seek help from Allied Nations and U.S forces.[3]
The civil war was primarily caused by the Chernarussian Movement of the Red Star (ChDKZ), a communist-socialist faction that had their presence in the northeastern Oblast called South Zagoria. The communist-socialist faction was also known as the 'Chedaki', an abbreviation of the full name. They committed several war crimes and attempted to cover them up, with their goal being to create a socialist state within Chernarus just like during the Soviet period of Chernarus's history . Feelings of nostalgia for the Soviet Union and its superpower status under socialism led to their creation and agenda and small gained support among older generations who lived most of their life in the Soviet Union. It was not until a staged bombing in Red Square in Moscow, Russia, that led to the Chedaki's annexation of various regions of Chernarus. After the movement spread across almost all of South Zagoria and several other contested territory of Chernarus, they took the island of Utes and kicked out the CDF forces stationed there, which was only later to be liberated by the United States Marine Corps.
The Russian Federation became involved after the ChDKZ staged the bombing in Russia, killing dozens. The Russian government was fooled into thinking it was the nationalist guerrilla faction known as the National Party (NAPA) that conducted the bombing which had links to the Chernarussian government, thus leading to the presence of Russian troops in the very north of South Zagoria. They gave excessive amounts of weapons to the ChDKZ which was already against the Chernarussian government, in turn causing the civil war of 2009 where the whole region of South Zagoria collapsed into chaos and death. The AN and the US were sent into the southern parts of the oblast, securing coastal cities from the ChDKZ like Chernogorsk to liberate cities and secure any further conflict between the nations. It was only to be revealed in one of the endings of the ArmA II campaign, that a rogue government official in the Russian government sent money and support to the ChDKZ to deface and frame NAPA as the sole perpetrator of the terrorist attack in Russia, and sought to bring a war between Russia and Chernarus.
Outbreak[edit | edit source]
Not much is known about the Infected outbreak in Chernarus, but sometime after the civil war of 2009, the inhabitants of the country became infected, likely with a disease or a similar biological affliction. It can be assumed the infection began sometime between late 2012 and late 2013 however, or was at least occuring during that time due to the presence of the FNX-45 in the loot tables in-game.
In many places around Chernarus, garbage bags marked as 'toxic waste' can be found, indicating some clean-up attempt was potentially made during the beginning of the outbreak.
At the same time, military troops of the Chernarus Defense Force, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and the Allied Nations were clearly in Chernarus. If the reason for this was the outbreak, or the prior/coincidental civil war, is not known. Regardless, the combined forces could not stop the hordes of infected and were slowly overrun even with heavy weapons like tanks, which were destroyed or abandoned. The military tried to contain the outbreak and organised the systematic disposal of corpses (as can be seen at Kamensk Military Base).
Post-Outbreak[edit | edit source]
After the outbreak, the local military and civilian defenses were overwhelmed and disintegrated. All inhabitants either fled the country, were turned into Infected, or roam the desolated area as Survivors. The lawlessness led to a rise in banditry and an overall lack of equipment and available food.
Geography[edit | edit source]

Chernarus is located somewhere in the Caucasus Mountains, with the Green Sea on its eastern and southern borders. It consists of rough terrain and even a few islands. It has a rugged yet verdant environment of rolling hills, covered by dense forests and deep valleys, hidden in forested ridges or on elevated plateaus with lush meadows. Its valleys conceal quaint rural villages connected by barely perceptible dirt tracks, while its coastlines support sprawling industrial cities with wide roads and rail networks.
This area has the typical climate of an Eastern European country. It has fairly diverse vegetation with multiple useful plants, and its wildlife consists of former domesticated species and different wild animals. For a detailed description of the different landmarks see the Landscape article.

The larger country is divided into three oblasts: North Trikani Oblast, South Zagoria Oblast, and Central Kopec Oblast. Oblasts are similar to provinces, and are commonly used in post-Soviet countries such as in Russia or Ukraine.
Politics and Economy[edit | edit source]
Chernarus previously produced multiple natural resources such as wood and different mined materials, which can be seen among the various factories -- especially the lumber mill in Berezino or the quarry in Solnichniy.
Infrastructure[edit | edit source]
The country has a developed network of roads and streets, but only a few are asphalt or even two-lane streets. Most rivers are regulated by different dams.
South Zagoria has only one power plant, located in the post soviet industrial city Elektrozavodsk. Multiple power lines stretch out from it all over the oblast. The country also had its own fire and police departments.
Towns and Cities[edit | edit source]
There are five major coastal towns:
Major towns off the coast include:
There are also many more smaller towns, villages, hamlets, etc. Scattered around Chernarus, you can also find a plethora of man-made landmarks, including multiple historic castles that can be visited.
Police and Military[edit | edit source]
Before the outbreak, Chernarus had a strong presence of police and military. There were multiple bases in Chernarus, but with the Infected outbreak, even more temporary camps were established.
For a full list of such places, see these articles:
Other Civilian Groups[edit | edit source]Culture[edit | edit source]Language[edit | edit source]
The day-to-day language of Chernarus is a mix of Russian and Chernarussian, with the latter being fictional but identical to the Czech language, and simply renamed as 'Chernarussian'. Chernarus was based on both Russia and the Czech Republic during development. The idea of Chernarus being a Slavic country closely bound to Russia is similar to real world counterparts, where Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia are historically similar in both language and Slavic culture. Additionally, Chernarus is also based off the development team's home country, the Czech Republic. Throughout Chernarus you can see vending machines and signs written in Chernarussian (Czech), alongside Russian ones. The lingua franca of the Northern Province in Chernarus is Russian, thus making the northern province of South Zagoria (the current map of DayZ) close to the border of Russia a rare region to find signs in native Chernarussian (Czech).
Chernarussian is also written in the Latin script, making it easy to distinguish the Cyrillic Russian from the Latin Chernarussian language. Because of the rarity and prominent absence of the Chernarussian language, it is easily assumed that DayZ takes place in Russia whilst it doesn't. In the School buildings found around the map, the primary language used in Schools throughout the entire country is Chernarussian, as evident on posters and information boards. Russian is also used as a second language, based off of posters with the entire Russian alphabet.
Religion[edit | edit source]
The most prominent religion in Chernarus is the Eastern Orthodox Church, as identifiable by the multiple churches found throughout the map, just as in any typical Eastern European Slavic countries. Orthodox churches can be found in all different sizes, and in every city. The other appearance of Chernarus in ARMA II features priest civilians dressed in Orthodox clothing.
Architecture[edit | edit source]
Chernarus has well preserved cities and towns using primarily traditional architecture, which makes it unique. Just like the Czech Republic, Chernarus has more traditional styled buildings than modern, many of which are based off of real life counterparts in the Czech republic. Neo-Classical architecture can be found in many cities, with row houses being a prime example. Stalinist architecture is also another form of architecture that can be seen in Chernarus, however uncommonly. The only example of Stalinist architecture is the municipal City Hall building in Novodmitrovsk, one of the tallest buildings in the game. It is also rare to find any trace of modern architecture other than from the Soviet era. During the Soviet era of Chernarus, many apartment blocks, schools, and stores were built in Brutalist and Socialist Realist architecture styles, Brutalism finds its origins from Western Europe, and was widely used in the USSR during the early 1960's after the severe housing crisis from World War 2.
Map[edit | edit source]
In DayZ Standalone, the game map known as Chernarus is expanded and hugely overhauled compared to the DayZ Mod. More objects, enhanced models, textures, etc. are used in a more detailed manner. Some assets from ArmA II are still present and might always be, but are slowly being either replaced or enhanced.

To differentiate the maps, the current version in Standalone is referred as Chernarus+, instead of just 'Chernarus'.
Outside of South Zagoria[edit | edit source]
As mentioned above, the Chernarus where DayZ Standalone takes place is only one part of a much larger country, with the playable area being known as South Zagoria. There are other territories beyond what we can see, and indeed other countries outside Chernarus with whom it shares a border.

DayZ is a multiplayeropen worldsurvivalthird-person shootermodification designed by Dean Hall for the 2009 tactical shooter video game ARMA 2 and its 2010 expansion pack, ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead. The mod places the player in the fictional post-Soviet state of Chernarus, where a mysterious plague has infected most of the population, turning people into violent zombies. As a survivor with limited resources, the player must scavenge the world for supplies such as food, water, weapons and medicine, while killing or avoiding both zombies and other players, and sometimes non-player characters, in an effort to survive the zombie apocalypse.
DayZ has been praised for its innovative design elements. The mod reached one million players in its first four months on August 6, 2012, with hundreds of thousands of people purchasing ARMA 2 just to play it. In response to its popularity, Bohemia Interactive made a standalone game. The mod remains in continued development by its community.
During the alpha, designer Dean Hall became part of Bohemia Interactive, and the mod, retitled to Arma II: DayZ Mod, was officially released on February 21, 2013.
Gameplay[edit]
A player character wearing a ghillie suit lies in the prone position while pointing his M14 DMR across the water. The reticle in the HUD may be seen superimposed next to the bush which is to the right of the player.
DayZ attempts to portray a realistic scenario within the gameplay, with the environment having different effects on the player. A character may receive bone fractures from damage to their legs, go into shock from bullet wounds or zombie bites, receive infections from zombies or diseased players, or faint due to low blood pressure. Thirst and hunger must be kept under control by finding sustenance in either cities or the wilderness, with body temperature playing a key part in the character's survival.[1] The game focuses on surviving and the human elements of a zombie apocalypse by forcing the player to acknowledge basic human needs like thirst, hunger and shelter. These mechanics require the player to focus on immediate goals before they can consider long-term strategies.[2]
DayZ is praised for its level of emergent gameplay. BuzzFeed author Russell Brandom suggested that the mod has spawned the first photojournalist in a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, creating articles that are not only about a game world but journalism told from within it.[3] Brandom claimed that DayZ is a unique example of the massively multiplayer online game genre in giving players the freedom to harm or murder each other, whilst adding no restrictions on how or why they may do it, quoting a player who described it as 'the story of people'.[3] The mod has been compared by Kotaku to The Walking Dead and its focus on interactions between the characters when faced with desperate situations. The players in DayZ are forced to deal with dilemmas in similar ways as portrayed in both the comics and TV series for The Walking Dead.[4]
It has been proposed that DayZ provides some insight into people's motivations and behaviors when reacting to real crisis events, mirroring controlled experiments of a similar nature. However, some critics of this theory argue that participants do not react as they would in a real world situation in which their life is truly threatened.[5] Despite the game being biased towards self-interested, hostile competition, many players enter the game with their own perceptions and priorities. These varied approaches and experiences within the game suggest that even in a system that should theoretically promote rational behaviour, people act in unexpected ways. It has been proposed that this dispels the idea that chaos is an objective and defining feature of the system, rather it is what players make of it.[5]
Development[edit]
Dean Hall created the concept while he was a soldier in the New Zealand Army, as a suggestion for training soldiers through exposure to situations provoking emotion and relevant thought processes.[6] He has stated he was inspired by experiences during jungle training while on exchange with the Singapore Armed Forces in Brunei, where he was badly injured in a survival skills exercise.[7] Hall has stated that what he had endured then directly affected the development of DayZ, and the creation of immersion through forcing the player to experience emotion and tension as part of gameplay.[8] Hall believed that early rapid success of the mod was largely due to social media and consumers' desire for games that provided significant challenge.[9] Hall has described the mod as something of an 'anti-game' as it broke what he felt were generally considered to be basic rules of game design such as balance and not frustrating users.[10] Ac3 tamil songs download.
First requiring manual installation, DayZ can now be downloaded, for free, from Steam. On August 7, 2012, Dean Hall announced on the game's development blog[11] that the mod was going to be made into its own game, with Bohemia Interactive as the developer,[12][13] and himself as the project leader.[14][15][16] On October 29, 2012, development of the mod officially transferred to a largely community driven effort with the release of version 1.7.3.[17]
Reception[edit]Arma 3 Maps Download
DayZ acquired a large user base due to its unique gameplay.[8] By August 2012, three months after release, the mod had registered more than one million unique users.[18]IGN called it one of the most popular PC games in the world 'right now' four months after release.[19] It was credited for over 300,000 unit sales of ARMA 2 within two months of the mod's release,[1] putting this three-year-old title in the top seller charts on Steam for over seven weeks, much of this time as the top selling game.[9][20]
Marek Španěl, CEO of ARMA 2 developer Bohemia Interactive, said the mod was directly driving sales of the game and applauded it for an addictive and thrilling experience, saying that it could stand as a gaming experience on its own.[21] The mod was also praised by video game developers not involved with the series. Kristoffer Touborg from CCP (EVE-Online) said it was the best game he has played in several months and called it particularly innovative given the first-person shooter genre, which he considered to be one of gaming's least innovative genres.[22] Game designers Erik Wolpaw and Tim Schafer stated at PAX Prime 2012 that they believe that player-driven experiences such as DayZ are the future of gaming, commenting on what the title achieved without having a driving narrative.[23]
Media reception[edit]
The mod received widespread media acclaim. Edge called DayZ the mod of the year.[24]Wired UK's Quitin Smith said it could be the most terrifying game of 2012,[25] and Rock Paper Shotgun's Jim Rossignol called it the best game he had played so far in 2012.[26]PC Gamer stated the game was one of the most important things to happen to PC gaming in 2012[27] and included it in their 2012 list of the top five scariest PC games of all time.[28]Metro called it one of the best games to ever to come out of PC modding and one of the single most impressive experiences available on the system.[29]Eurogamer called it the best zombie game ever made[30] and the break out phenomenon of PC gaming in 2012.[31]Kotaku called it possibly the greatest zombie game of all time[32] and the most interesting PC game of 2012.[33]PC PowerPlay said DayZ was the most important thing to happen to PC gaming in 2012.[34]
Eurogamer's Stace Harman suggested that the mod's designer Dean Hall might be responsible for some of the most emotive stories to come from playing a video game.[2] Chris Pereiraa of 1UP.com called it a 'shining example of PC gaming at its finest', stating the tension from interacting with other players leads to an experience unlike anything else he had experienced in gaming apart from making love in Heavy Rain, and cited the game as an example that PC gaming is not in decline, as the creation of such a mod is something that is only possible on a computer (as opposed to video game consoles).[35] According to bit-tech's Joe Martin, no other game in the genre has offered so compelling take on a zombie apocalypse and its impact of the mod on the industry might be similar to that of Defense of the Ancients and Counter-Strike.[36]
Awards[edit]
Standalone game[edit]
The standalone title, also called DayZ, carries over many of the core gameplay mechanisms of the ARMA 2 mod. DayZ has enhanced graphics, enhanced UI, and AI compared to the mod. DayZ launched on 8th generation consoles (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) in 2019.
